EPISODE DESCRIPTION –
In the first episode of season two of this podcast, Zena reviews reasons why stories matter, and what kinds of stories present a special opportunity for storytellers today, arguing that the world needs stories about everyday heroes to remind us what's possible in humanity, and to inspire us to transcend the boundaries of our own human limitations.
Some of the core ideas presented in this episode include:
1. Why your story matters in spite of (or perhaps because of) all of the terrible things happening around the world.
2. How storytellers have a duty to elevate society and restore its dignity or raise its moral consciousness by telling stories about heroes.
3. The term hero, as define by the Greeks, originally referred to men or women who who had accomplished something extraordinary, surpassing the normal limits of humanity.
4. Even those who had committed unthinkable crimes were lauded as heroic. They did not have to be morally good.
5. Today we associate moral fortitude with true heroism for good reason -- to live up to one's highest ideals in a world such as ours is an extraordinary feat in itself.
6. The world is becoming increasingly cynical, and most young people day seem to feel they have no one to look up to or emulate. This lack of "heroes" in our society is alarming at best since it ultimately determines our behavior.
7. We have the opportunity and the privilege to show the world what heroism looks like, and to make the world believe that it's possible even for them to live up to these high moral standards.
UP NEXT – We will continue to unpack the issue of why society needs heroes. We'll also differentiate between different kinds of heroes and explain why some types have caused more confusion and cynicism.
