Big Idea - Any human relationship requires rules and guidelines to work. Imagine a task as simple as driving, if there were no clear rules to govern which side of the road we drive on! Without rules, any interaction with others will soon become a collision with others. This is even more true when it comes to people being in a relationship with a Holy God. It could be argued that the only rule we need is to love each other and perhaps this would be true if we were like God, always knowing exactly what people need and how to best help them. But, we are not always that wise, and more than that, we have conflicting agendas. Our own selfishness and self-interest prevent us from seeing what others need, much less being willing to always do what is right and best for others. So the rules spell out clearly how we should treat each other and relate to one another. At the same time, we know the rules in and of themselves are not enough. A relationship built on rules without love would be cold and distant at best, and downright destructive at worst. So, how does the great commandment help us build strong and healthy relationships with each other and most importantly with God?
