Bryce starts by telling a story about one of the most hellish clients he has come across recently, outline what, exactly, makes this particularly terrible client so terrible. He then explains how the submitter ended up in this situation and what to do about it.

Basically: value yourself and seek out clients who appreciate you and your work.

UPDATE: The original poster provided closure on this story.

Next, he addresses a question from a freelance engineer who has too many potential clients who are too interested in wasting his time.

The solution is simple: get your client to invest in you early on (e.g. a downpayment, an initial meeting fee that's refunded in their first formal invoice) to ensure they're serious. It will save you an immense amount of time and energy, and it's a great way to qualify clients.
