What U.S. Senators from Indiana are Saying About Impeachment

Listen Later

Early Wednesday morning, the Senate passed a resolution in a 53-47 vote along party lines setting the structure for the third presidential impeachment trial in American history.
According to this resolution, each party has three days to make their opening arguments. The opening arguments will be followed by a 16-hour question-and-answer period in which senators submit questions to Chief Justice John Roberts, followed by a vote to decide whether the Senate wants to request fresh testimony or new evidence.
The divided Senate began the impeachment trial of President Trump on Tuesday with 12 hours of debate where Senate Republicans blocked Democrats’ efforts to subpoena witnesses and documents related to Ukraine.
Late last week, Indiana Senator Todd Young answered some questions about the upcoming trial while he spoke to combat veterans in Brown County.
According to Fox 59 Sen. Young said, “Ultimately, they did impeach the President. The trial is now going to us, each of us has sworn to be an impartial juror and I will do that.”
Although Sen. Young believes it is too early to tell if witnesses should be called in the upcoming trial, Indiana Senator Mike Braun said yes and doesn’t expect to see anything new in this process.
According to Fox 59 Sen. Braun said, “I think the public, especially in Indiana, has heard a lot of it. And unless there’s some new bombshell that would arrive , they’d rather we get on to issues like the cost of healthcare.”
Once the trial is over, the Senate will vote on whether or not to convict. This would require 67 votes, meaning 20 republicans would need to side with the Democrats.
