Growing Scrum Masters

What was your worst day as a scrum master and why?

Listen Later

#agile and #scrum environments have a reputation for being warm and fuzzy. Because the #agilemanifesto values people above processes and the #scrumframework focuses on scrum values, we automatically assume that working as a #scrummaster in these environments is filled with magic and rainbows.

The truth is that many organisations are still making the transition from the old style of working to more #agile and people-oriented styles of working.

Sometimes, in that hybrid state, you are going to come up against old school style of managers who have very different agendas, values and principles to those as defined in the Agile Manifesto.

In the #scrumframework, the #productowner, scrum master, and #developmentteam are focused on creating the highest value product, in the best way, with the objective of truly delighting customers.

In addition to that objective, the team are focused on continuous improvement, also known as #kaizen, and as such, it is easy to think that everybody in the organisation is focused on continuous improvement and customer delight.

That isn't always the case though. It can be incredibly heartbreaking for a dedicated scrum master to come up against the old school style of dictatorial management and leadership which values promotion, elitism and autocracy above all else.

In this short video, John McFadyen walks us through his worst day as a Scrum Master and explains how a collision between the old and the new styles of working resulted in his being fired as a contractor.

It's an insightful video that demonstrates just how dangerous it can be if you don't balance the old style of working environment with the ideals and optimism of #agile principles and values.

John McFadyen has worked on some of the highest-performing scrum teams in the world as both a scrum master and #agilecoach. He has also worked at the coalface of some of the largest, most complex Agile transformations in the UK and Europe.
