What We Saw In Darius Garland's LA Clippers Debut

Listen Later

We got our first real look at the new-era LA Clippers — and the debut of Darius Garland in a 114–101 win over the Golden State Warriors.

Under head coach Tyronn Lue, this team looks completely different after moving on from James Harden and reshaping the roster at the deadline.

Garland came off the bench in 23 minutes:

  • 12 points (4-9 FG)

  • 2-7 from three

  • 2 assists

  • 5 turnovers

  • +5 plus/minus

The rust showed in ball security. But the impact was real.

His perimeter gravity immediately stretched the floor. The Warriors respected his pull-up game, opening driving lanes and relieving pressure from Kawhi Leonard.

This wasn’t a polished performance — but it was promising.

Without Harden’s isolation-heavy offense, this team now plays faster and more balanced.

Bennedict Mathurin has been a major factor, averaging 19.0 PPG in his first seven games with LA and adding 17 points and 7 boards in this one.

Rookie big Yanic Konan Niederhauser delivered 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 2 steals in just 21 minutes (+10). That’s vertical spacing and rim protection replacing Ivica Zubac’s interior presence.

    Meanwhile, Kawhi remains the anchor:

23 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists — steady and surgical.

    Backcourt (Flow > Dominance):

Garland / Kris Dunn / Mathurin

Garland can operate on or off-ball, which fits Lue’s movement-heavy system. Kris Dunn (16 points, 7 assists, +18) slides into a perfect two-way backup role. Mathurin becomes the scoring detonator.

    Wings (Switchable Length):

Kawhi / Derrick Jones Jr. / Jordan Miller

Garland’s pick-and-roll playmaking should unlock cutters and slashers, while keeping double teams off Kawhi.

    Frontcourt (Spacing + Verticality):

Brook Lopez / Yanic Konan Niederhauser / Nicolas Batum / Isaiah Jackson

Garland thrives with pick-and-pop bigs like Lopez, while Niederhauser and Jackson provide lob threats.

The Clippers sacrificed Harden’s isolation mastery for:

    • Pace

    • Youth

    • Transition scoring

    • Rotation flexibility

Once Garland tightens up the turnovers and gets his conditioning back, this 12-man group has serious upside in the West.

In this video, Cyro Asseo breaks down:

      • Garland’s debut impact

      • The Mathurin scoring spark

      • Lue’s rotational chess moves

      • Why this new-look Clippers team could be dangerous

Is this reset actually raising LA’s ceiling?
