Samuel Shem’s 1978 novel The House of God, has been called “one of the most important medical novels written.” A sharp satire exposing the excessive and demanding medical training for doctors, it helped reshape internship practices. Shem is hoping to foster change again in his follow-up novel, Man’s 4th Best Hospital.
