A good cooking system is compact, light, and easy to use.  Here's one to try.
There are many great dehydrated meals to choose from but these are a few of our favorites: Mountain House Beef Stroganoff
and Backpacker's Pantry Creme Brulee.
We recommend a hard copy map and a good old-fashioned compass, but we also rely on GPS apps on our phones.  GAIA GPS is Gary's favorite. There are both free and premium versions.
If you want to learn more about orienteneering there are classes available nationwide.  This organization may be a good place to start...you can even become an orienteering competitor!
Being able to safely filter water is critical on the trail.  We use a Sawyer Mini filter.  Check it out here.
We also use a Camelback water bladder to help with filtration.
We love trekking poles and there are tons to choose from. Here's a low-cost way to try them out.
Gary never leaves home without his Swiss Army knife.
Christy's must-have is bear spray (bear canisters are great, too!)
Our favorite headlamps are these from L.L. Bean.
Small, convertible flashlights are handy to have, too.
