Ear, nose and throat specialist Jesse Ryan, MD, describes how jaw reconstructions are accomplished in patients who have lost a portion of their jaw due to injury or cancer. Surgery involves removing a piece of non-weight-bearing bone from the patient's leg and fashioning it to be used in the jaw. The procedure is called "microvascular free tissue transfer."
