One of the most natural inclinations we have as humans is a desire to use what is ours for ourselves. We spend the first several years of children’s lives teaching them to share. We never have to teach them to be protective of what is theirs. We do get better at sharing, but we also get better at hiding the fact that we aren’t sharing. As adults, we can be quite possessive of that which we deem is rightfully ours – especially our attention, actions, and money. But the whole of scripture is pretty clear, everything we have that we call “ours” is actually a gift from God. And what’s more, God didn’t give it to us so we can use it on ourselves. As followers of God, we are supposed to use all of our resources for the benefit of others. Jesus is the clearest example as his life is an embodiment of the expression, “What’s Mine Is Yours.”
