What’s Really Going On When You Overthink

Listen Later

EP342: Today's episode was inspired by a question one of my students asked me this past week and the feedback I gave her because what she is experiencing is very common and may help you.

She struggles with overthinking so if you are guilty of this too, then listen up, because what I told her gave her a much greater understanding of why she does this as well as how to stop this unnecessary and unhelpful behavior the next time she catches herself doing it.

Before I gave her feedback, I asked her questions to get more specific information about what it is she overthinks about and the circumstances and her behavior around the overthinking. The more specific you get, the clearer the problem becomes.

By the way, you can do this with yourself. Questions lead to answers, even if the answers don't come in the immediate moment, your brain will continue to look for them and provide you with insight if you are patient.

In her case, her overthinking, which is the cause of most overthinking, was directly tied to a lack of trust in her decision. And this lack of trust is because she is leaning too hard on logic and completely ignoring what her heart wants.

People do this ALL THE TIME. We make the most logical choice using our brain but then doubt creeps in because we've gone against what we really want. Intuitively, we have a deep knowing of the decision we should make at the time, but we are dismissing it.

We are not trusting our intuition and become fixated on making the wrong decision. But the truth is: there are never wrong decisions! There are only decisions I want to make now vs. the ones I don't want to make right now.

And the ones you should make right now are the ones you are intuitively led to make. Any overthinking after the decision is made is because you likely made the decision based on logic and you veered away from your intuition.

So change your decision and stop overthinking it.

And remember, a decision is not the end of the world. A decision is simply a forward step into action - a step that will lead to another decision.

Indecision is inaction and no step to anywhere. That's where overthinking will take you. Nowhere helpful and certainly nowhere that will be exciting and fun.
