One of Chicago’s most storied buildings will finally get a second life. The Hotel Florence opened back in 1881 as the star of George Pullman’s company town: a place with 50 guest rooms, elegant parlors, a buzzing bar, and even a private suite just for Pullman himself. It was a true hub of hospitality on the Far South Side. But for more than 20 years now, its doors have been locked, except for the rare guided tour, and efforts to revive it go back half a century. Now, a new plan is on the table. Dennis Rodkin, In the Loop's architecture expert, and Mike Shymanski, former president of the Historic Pullman Foundation, share the details.
