Among the common hot topics of our day, like Critical Race Theory and sex-ed, you’ve probably heard about something else lately: Social Emotional Learning (SEL). What is SEL? It’s been around for decades. Its design and purpose are good: to teach kids how to manage emotions, have empathy, and a healthy self identity. But SEL, especially with recent changes to curriculum, has become the perfect place for ideological controversy to sneak in and become indoctrination. How did this happen and are there any upsides to keeping Social Emotional Learning in schools?
