Mel’s Mindful Moments Season 1 - Episode 137
In today’s episode I want to embark on a profound journey to explore the age-old question: What is the meaning of life and its purpose?
Throughout history, humans have sought answers to this complicated inquiry, and today, I will attempt to create a broad yet informative guide for you to discover the answer to these questions for yourselves. By the way, there is no One Purpose or One Meaning of Life. If you asked a hundred people these questions, you will get a hundred different answers.
Let’s begin our “Quest for Meaning” by defining for ourselves how we view the world. Here we are peering out into the world from our own eye sockets. Our minds constantly processing this view that’s presented to us. What do we see, what do we feel, what do we like, dislike, need, desire, or cherish? What do we think is beautiful, ugly, interesting, or boring? What makes us grateful, laugh, cry, get angry, saddens us, or brings us immense joy?
What do we like to do, see, listen to, taste, smell, play, or watch? What kind of career do we want, where do we want to live? Where do we want to travel? Do we want to get married, stay single, start a family, get divorced, or get remarried? What are our values, beliefs, or spiritual alignment? I can go on an on, but you get the idea of what kind of questions we need to answer for ourselves. The meaning of life is hidden within the answers to questions such as these and will in essence define the Meaning of Life that is uniquely tailored to the one who answers them.
Now that we have answered these core questions, and defined our Meaning of Life, we can continue to step two and discover what is our Purpose in life. I’m sure everyone has heard of the term Purpose-Driven Life, there is even a book by this title. This is when your Purpose in Life supports your Meaning of Life. Although these two may sound like the same things, they are very different. Your purpose in life is to fulfill your Meaning of Life. In other words, all the things that make you who you uniquely are, will be supported by your purpose in life. Another word for purpose is ‘motive’. So your purpose in life is whatever motivates you to fulfill your Meaning of Life or simply put, your purpose is to achieve those things that will fulfill your wants, and desires.
When this topic is broken down into these simple terms, it’s not so mysterious after all. Is it?
I hope you can put this into practice and start moving towards your True Meaning of Life and that your Purpose motivates you enough to achieve success!
