Mayor Mamdani commemorated the rollout of 700 new trash containers called Empire Bins. He says the rat-proof bins will reduce pests, make sidewalks more accessible and improve the lives of sanitation workers.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says the NYPD has seized 4,500 illegal guns since the start of 2026. She says 100 fewer people have been shot this year, compared to last year, which was already a historic low.

Governor Kathy Hochul says she’s protecting 2.5 million free meals daily for students by continuing to fully fund school meals, despite federal cuts to food assistance programs. She says this’ll help families save up to $1,600 per child per year on groceries.

Ballot proposal 1 is titled “Speed Up Process for Granting a Revocable Consent to Use Public Space.” This proposal would speed up the process for granting public space permits for businesses. Proponents like Citizens Union and the Citizens Budget Commission say this is a good thing, but opponents, like Common Cause, say it would take away opportunities for community input. WFUV’s Sienna Reinders reports on the proposal and why people oppose it.
