This classic Western story takes place on a cattle ranch. When a mysterious stranger comes walking into town seeking employment at the Cross-Triangle Ranch, life changes for these simple country folk. The stranger goes by the name Honorable Patches, and throughout the book his tumultuous past and his intentions for coming out West are revealed. Patches is put to the test many times by the other employees, including the caretaker, Phil Acton, and the owner, Dean Baldwin. As Patches continues to prove his worth, the ranch employees learn the importance of a natural life and its role in what it means to be a man.
Harold Bell Wright (1872-1944) was a Disciples of Christ minister. He traveled extensively and wrote about the goodness of mankind. After authoring That Printer of Udell's - a book that inspired Ronald Reagan - he wrote The Shepherd of the Hills, which has sold more than one million copies. Wright's ongoing battle with tuberculosis led him to settle in Imperial Valley, California, where he wrote The Winning of Barbara Worth. The following books are published by Pelican as a set: A Harold Bell Wright Trilogy: The Shepherd of the Hills, The Calling of Dan Matthews, and God and the Grocery Man.

Mind and Body
HBWâs basic philosophy was that we are given a mind to learn and a body to work. To be a whole man, satisfaction in the productive use of both is required of us. This idea is seen in all of his novels but comes out more directly in this one.
His appreciation of horses is also obvious in many of his works, but it is more directly addressed here.
I have read most of HBWâs novels and recommend them to others even though I can never rate them 5 stars. He is a great writer until the conclusions which often verge on hokum. This book is no exception. Our hero rides off alone into the sunset.

he enjoyed it and took it to a man who is homebound and he is enjoying it. We both remember reading it as children about 12 years old and loved it then
When A Man's A Man
This author is great. I have a list of all his books and a list of his books that were turned into movies and seen all of them. He really takes you there in his stories. I can smell the trees, water, animals, hear the birds feel the people. He was a great author. This is a very good book. The ones that I have read so far I have truely enjoyed them. His books really makes a person think.

I enjoy Harold Bell Wright books but this is my least favorite of all of his. And the only reason is how the book ends. All the rest of the book is great! I just don't like the last chapter or two.
Five Stars
