In my 2018 spring hip-hop course students created group podcast episodes for a final project exploring how hip-hop perpetuates misognyoir (anti-black oppression and bias against females). I, the professor, do my own take at unlocking the b-word--the bias from patriarchy and misogynoir--to tell how hip-hop continues to rob the most marginalized group in the hip-hop community of voice.

The B-word stands for “bias” against black girls and women in music but speaks to interlocking forms of oppression in music and mobile technology. I am Dr. Kyra Gaunt, a digital ethnomusicologist, a prize winning author of a best-selling book, and a professor of music and culture. I conduct hip-hop music studies, Black girlhood studies, and write about hip-hop as music and Black feminist thought.
