Not all of the Gospels (Matthew’s, Mark’s, Luke’s, and John’s) include every event in the life and ministry of Jesus (only Matthew’s and Luke’s tell the Christmas story, for instance). But all four Gospels include these three episodes in the ministry of Jesus - (1) His baptism at the beginning of His ministry; (2) the week that began with His entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and climaxed with His suffering, death, and resurrection; and (3) today’s Gospel lesson (this time, from Saint Mark’s Gospel), that tells about the miracle when Jesus fed more than 5000 people with a five loaves of bread and two fish.
This summer most of the Gospel lessons are in the Gospel according to Saint Mark. These readings talk about Jesus’ teachings, His miracles, and His action-packed ministry. But each of the readings also has a “takeaway” from Jesus Himself! We’re focusing on these “red-letter” verses this summer. Here’s this week’s, from Mark chapter 6, verse 38: Jesus asked His disciples “How many loaves [breads] do you have?”
