On Friday 4th of December 2020, the appeal court in Abuja, Nigeria upheld the death sentence for Maryam Sanda.

Maryam is accused of killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, on the same day she found a photo of a nude woman on his phone. Maryam has maintained that she was upset, but denies killing him. She says that they argued, they had a physical struggle and he fell onto a broken shisha (hookah) bottle. The police dispute this account, arguing that Bello’s fatal wounds were more likely caused by a kitchen knife.

No weapon was found. No autopsy was conducted. No one saw what happened.

Maryam is sentenced to die by hanging.
