Glenda Richardson (00:00): The next piece is called "When Mahalia Sings," and it's a representation of Mahalia Jackson, famous gospel singer. I like to do portraits because, and it just occurred to me recently, stories are told in our bodies, and this is a piece where the person who's being represented is being represented in a very physical way. It's her physicality that makes the piece. It's what makes you hear Mahalia when you see it.
(00:38): And the fact that there's a stained glass background, you know this is somebody that's of the spirit and in the spirit and the various, it's covered with vintage lace and vintage linens. She also loved wearing that big jewelry, so it's in there too. Portrait is not just a picture of an individual. It's something that says more about their spirit than just a photographic representation.
