When Pain Becomes a Stage for Grace

Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. - John 9:3.

Imagine living in darkness from birth. A man, blind since the day he was born—he had never seen his mother’s face, the light of day, or the stars in the sky. And in front of this silent, lifelong suffering, the disciples ask Jesus, “Who sinned? This man or his parents?” They were looking for a cause. They wanted someone to blame. But Jesus didn’t give them the answer they expected. He gave them something greater: a revelation.

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” At first glance, it might sound like God made the man blind just to later perform a miracle. But when we look deeper into the original meaning of the text, we realize Jesus wasn’t saying that God caused the suffering—He was saying that God could use it. What the enemy meant for harm, God turns into a testimony. What was once darkness becomes a stage for His light.

That blind man is just like so many of us. Sometimes we can’t see the purpose, we don’t understand the pain, and we don’t know the way out. But there’s a Christ who sees. He meets us in the darkness, touches the clay of our story, and sends us to the waters of obedience. And when we follow, even without understanding, we come back seeing. Not just with our eyes—but with our hearts. We begin to see meaning, we see grace, we see God.

The truth is, not all pain comes from sin, but every pain can become a part of God’s plan. Jesus didn’t just come to heal physical eyes—He came to open the eyes of the soul. That only happens when we stop asking who’s to blame and start asking what God wants to do through what we’re going through.

Today, maybe you can’t see. Maybe you’re surrounded by darkness. But if Christ sees you—and He does—then hope is already alive. Your story won’t end where it started. That man’s blindness was turned into glory. And yours can be too. Because with Jesus, even pain becomes light.
