Following the fire of Notre Dame, a photo began circulating of a golden cross standing at the centre of the burned out wreckage. The caption of the photo hailed it as a miracle! Unfortunately scientists pointed out that gold doesn’t melt in a wood fire since it doesn’t burn hot enough. The photo was still shared many times and many times someone would point out that it wasn’t a miracle, it was exactly what someone would expect to happen. Despite this example, or perhaps because of examples like this, people in our society are generally far more skeptical about miracles now than they ever have been.
So what do we do with the claims of miracles in the Bible? How do we understand the stories where people claim to have seen or experienced a miracle? Do we really believe things like that can happen? For many of us, if we’re honest, the answer is “no.” We’d just as soon expect to see a pig fly. We generally look for scientific explanations, or metaphorical interpretations that make us feel more comfortable reading the story. Around Jesus, though, there are plenty of events that cannot easily be explained. Eyesight to the blind. Diseases healed. Demons cast out. The dead raised to life.
Join us as we start our 5 week exploration of the wonder and joy of miracles. We want to appreciate the fantastic, crazy, outlandish miracles that really happen and open our eyes to the miraculous work God can do in our hearts. #wollongongsalvos #miracles #whenpigsfly
