Religion can look alive while the heart is dying.
That is the uncomfortable message Jesus delivers throughout the Book of Matthew, and nowhere is it clearer than in His confrontations with the Pharisees. These were not enemies of faith. They were its most visible representatives. They preached Scripture, enforced moral standards, and shaped public religious life. From the outside, they looked like the very definition of godliness.
Yet Jesus spoke to them with a severity He used for no one else.
Why?
Because they replaced repentance with religion. They trusted structure instead of surrender. They relied on behavior instead of brokenness. And in doing so, they missed the very Messiah they claimed to be waiting for.
This is not merely a historical lesson. It is a present danger.
