Most of Iberia was under control of the Umayyad Muslims in the 8th century, but the tables were turned after their defeat at the Battle of Covdonga in 722 by the Visigoths led by Pelagius. They fled on what is now a beautiful hiking trail called Ruta de la Reconquista in the Picos de Europa
