Scripture:
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” — Psalm 42:5
Sometimes the hardest words to say are the simplest ones:
“I’m not fine.”
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we reflect on Psalm 42 and the honesty of the psalmist. This is not a cheerful song. It is the voice of someone who is cast down, unsettled, and struggling to make sense of what they are feeling.
And yet, instead of pretending, the psalmist does something powerful — he speaks honestly about where he is.
There is no performance.
No polished response.
Just truth.
But he does not stop there.
In the middle of his struggle, he gently redirects his soul: “Hope thou in God.” Not denying the pain, but refusing to let it have the final word.
This devotional reminds us that we do not have to pretend before God. He already knows. And He meets us not in perfection, but in honesty.
If you are walking through a difficult season — emotionally, physically, or spiritually — this is an invitation to bring your real condition before God and trust that He is still present, still listening, and still leading.
The praise may feel far away.
But it will come again.
