In our experience, many religious leaders proclaim themselves as 'THE Mouthpiece of God' in order to control and gatekeep. When even Paul states in 1st Timothy that there is only ONE mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.

Religious leaders commit spiritual murder when they prevent the awakening and rebirth and revelation of an individual because said individual doesn't do it according to that religion's dogma. They believe if it didn't pass that organization's litmus test, it must be a product of deception or the devil.

Anne Lamott says it best, "You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do."  (from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life)
