When Work Feels Like Toil
Scripture:
Genesis 3:17 — “Cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.”
Devotional:
After the Fall, work changed. It didn’t disappear—Adam still worked the ground—but now it came with “pain” and resistance. The soil would fight back. Thorns and thistles would grow. Labor would still provide, but it would be marked by toil, sweat, and frustration.
You see this every day: plans fall apart, systems break, people misunderstand, tools fail, markets shift, and your best efforts sometimes feel swallowed by obstacles. When work feels heavy or unproductive, you are experiencing the ripple effects of Genesis 3.
But this isn’t the whole story. The curse explains why work is hard; it doesn’t erase its dignity or purpose. God didn’t remove the calling to work—He meets you in it. Even in toil, He offers strength, wisdom, and hope. When you face difficulty, you’re not abandoned; you’re invited to lean on Him in a fallen world.
Reflection Questions:
Prayer:
Lord, I feel the weight of work in a broken world. Help me not lose heart when tasks are difficult or progress is slow. Meet me in the middle of the toil and remind me You are with me. Amen.
