Starting Right

When You Cannot Understand Loss, You Can Still Love

Listen Later

A single phone call can change the shape of your whole week and sometimes your whole life. After hearing about a friend’s unexpected loss of her son, we slow down and sit with the kind of grief that has no quick fix, especially the pain of losing a child. If you have ever struggled to find the right words for someone suffering, or you have carried private sorrow yourself, this short episode offers a steady, compassionate place to breathe.

We share a story often connected with Dr. James Dobson: a father who receives the crushing news of his daughter’s death and writes her a letter. Her name is Bristol, and his words trace years of disability, medical appointments, sleepless nights, feeding struggles, and “so many diapers.” The details are heartbreaking and honest, but the point is love, love that remains when faith is strong and also when anger and doubt show up. It is a moving reflection on parental love, caregiving, and what it means to keep loving when you never get the closure you crave.

To close, we turn to Psalm 34, a passage many people cling to in seasons of loss, fear, and anxiety. It speaks to praising through pain, praying in desperation, and believing that God hears us when we are at the end of ourselves. If this resonates, subscribe, share it with someone who needs comfort, and leave a review so more listeners can find these five minutes of hope.
