When Your Kid Hates Their Coach | Ep 20

Listen Later

The dreaded moment arrives without warning. Your young athlete walks through the door, face clouded with frustration, and declares: "I hate my coach." Your stomach drops, and suddenly you're faced with an impossible choice. Do you defend the coach? Side with your child? Try to fix the situation?

In today's episode in the Communication Mastery series, I'll show you why none of these instinctive responses addresses what's really happening beneath the surface. When a child expresses hatred for their coach, they're rarely communicating an actual problem with the adult in charge. Instead, they're expressing deeper feelings of frustration, embarrassment, disappointment, or simply struggling with authority. This challenging moment presents one of the most powerful teaching opportunities you'll encounter as a parent of an athlete.

The approach I recommend comes from years on both sides of this equation – as a father of five young athletes and as a coach who has undoubtedly been the subject of similar declarations. Instead of reactively choosing sides, focus on three guiding principles: validate without agreeing, stay bigger than the moment, and model composure. These principles transform a potential conflict into a life lesson about handling authority, processing emotions, and developing resilience. Remember that tough coaches often build toughness, and what should truly concern you isn't when a coach is being demanding, but when they stop talking to your child altogether. That silence, not criticism, indicates they've given up.

Ultimately, these sports moments are rehearsals for life's bigger challenges. Your child will encounter difficult bosses, demanding teachers, and complicated relationships throughout their journey. How they learn to navigate these dynamics now—guided by your steady presence and wisdom—will shape their approach to authority and conflict resolution for years to come. Don't miss this opportunity to help them develop the emotional intelligence that will serve them in every arena of life. Share this episode with another parent who needs to hear it, and remember: your kids are watching how you handle these moments too.
