Where did supermassive black holes come from?

The answer is different than we once thought.
Based on observations from our observatories, we now have evidence that supermassive black holes may have formed from a process known as direct collapse.
In direct collapse, huge clouds or streams of gas collapse to make seed black holes, maybe even before the galaxies that we associate them with are created.
