In the winter of 2018, a young man named Male Alexander Gumm embarked on a journey from his home in North Berwick, Maine, to the lush landscapes of Kauai, Hawaii, in what he described as a quest for 'enlightenment.' This trip, however, would mark the beginning of a heart-wrenching mystery for his family and friends. In the time leading up to his departure, those close to Alexander noticed a significant change in his behavior. He grew distant from his social circles and even took a vow of silence with his parents. His interests had shifted towards spiritualism, religion, and natural healing, leading him to adopt a strict vegan diet and spend a great deal of his time in meditation. A talented musician and artist, Alexander had once dreamed of a professional career in music but began to reject the ideas of fame and fortune.On February 22, 2018, his parents drove him to a bus depot in Dover, New Hampshire, under the impression he was heading elsewhere. From there, he took a bus to Boston and boarded a flight to Kauai. Upon his arrival, he checked into the Kauai Beach House Hostel, where he stayed for two days. Records show he attempted to contact two taxi companies on February 22 and 23, though neither has a record of picking him up. The last known activity from his phone was a call made from the hostel on February 24, 2018. After that, all communication ceased. He left the hostel without a trace and has not been seen or heard from since.The investigation into Alexander's disappearance has been fraught with uncertainty and few solid leads. He had traveled to Hawaii with only cash, and the nearly $8,000 in his bank account has remained untouched. His family believes he may have sought out Buddhist or Hindu monks in his spiritual search. In late 2019, his friends traveled to Hawaii to search for him, uncovering potential sightings of him camping and possibly purchasing camping gear in the spring of that year. Many of his friends speculate that he may have ventured into the Kalalau Valley to live off the grid, a place known for attracting those seeking a reclusive lifestyle. The rugged and remote nature of Kauai's terrain has made search efforts incredibly challenging. While some theories point to the possibility of suicide, given some erratic behavior prior to his trip, his family holds out hope that he is still alive and will make contact when he is ready. The case of Male Alexander Gumm remains an open and perplexing mystery, a story of a young man who seemingly vanished while in search of something profound, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and a family waiting for any sign of his return.
