The Talking Point

Where is the process of District Six?

Listen Later

Tributes are still pouring in for the late co-founder of Cape Town's District Six museum, Noor Ebrahim. His family announced his death on Saturday at the age of 78. Ebrahim captured District Six through photographs that are now exhibited in the museum. The apartheid regime had forcibly removed him and his family from the area. The current issue in court is that of a mediation process underway to determine whether the families residing in six cottages in Searle Street in District Six will be evicted.  They survived the forced removals during apartheid and have been living in the cottages for three generations since the 1920s. The property was bought by a Gauteng investor. So we thought to use this opportunity to remind ourselves of the history of District Six and how they got to where they are today and also what they feel is outstanding for them.
