Owner of up-and-coming Hawaiʻi streetwear brand BudzandBaddiez, Chavis Cutcher Sumida, shares his story about growing up in Hawaiʻi, his college experience in California, moving to Las Vegas, and ultimately, creating a clothing brand that stays true to his roots and the place that raised him.
Graduating from Kauaʻi High School in 2022, Chavis was always creative while growing up. He later went to college in California, majoring in architecture, and then he decided to shift his path and pursue other opportunities. Throughout this episode, he emphasizes the importance of doing what is best for you when deciding whether to move away from Hawaiʻi.
As a "typical local boy," Chavis talks about adjusting to new environments while navigating the challenges of growing a Hawaiʻi-inspired brand outside the islands. He tells of his support from family and friends and appreciates his loyal customers who continue to show up and purchase his newest releases. Only establishing the brand in April 2023, he has created about 20 "drops" and designs and hosted truck cruises and pop-up events while also collaborating with companies like 808ALLDAY. In the new year, this young, 20-year-old entrepreneur hopes to be more involved in the community, uplift other small local Hawaiʻi businesses, and work to better his own company through customer service and social media. He is optimistic about the future of his company and provides tips for other individuals interested in starting their own business or moving away from home.
Chavis provides some clarity about the company and also shares some new unreleased information about upcoming projects!
