GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — wrote down the boundary of its job in plain language on its first body page: criteria for low-impact chemical inputs. Not soil-return. Not biodegradation. The label compresses that fifty-page scope into one word: organic. The consumer reads soil-return when the standard says nothing of the kind.
