Members Reviews:
Intriguing page-turner for its engaging mingling of poetic fiction and history. A must for everybody, not just Californians
I approached the book with some caution since I'm not so keen on historical novels. Much to my joy, I was spirited away to that period of California's history as if had become a time traveler enabled by the author's intense and cinematic descriptions of nature and events. It was a wonderful surprise for me, a mystical experience, as both the fictional and historical stories had been blended perfectly. My husband read it too and was deeply involved because he, unlike me, adores historical novels and can remember an incredible amount of dates and facts. He kept on quoting events out of the book and commented on them with me while expressing his complete satisfaction. A native Californian himself, he pointed out that most lifelong Californians know virtually nothing about this aspect of their history. The Bear Flag Revolt was a major turning point for this state's destiny, for better or worse, and it's a shame that the general public is unaware of it. This book should be on the required reading list of any student of California history.
Informative and Entertaining
Fascinating historical account of California in the years before it became part of the United States. The book opens with an exciting, page-turning depiction of mountain man and protagonist Jesse in a battle for his life as he gravitates westward into California, a land so many were drawn to though little was truly known about it. The author cleverly intertwines historical figures with fictional characters. His prose passages describing the countryside, the ocean and the weather verge on poetry, and make this an extremely visual reading experience; often you feel you really are there.
Enjoyed this easy reading historical fiction
Enjoyed this easy reading historical fiction. Adventurous enough, to want to get to the next page. Having lived in California, I was curious how this state became part of the United States and learned other interesting facts of life during that time.

Very well written and of special interest to anyone living in California. It brings a little known, but very exciting, period of California history to vivid life. A must-read for anyone planning a visit to Fort Ross.
A spirited tale of old California.
A good read. An interesting period of California history that wasn't covered very well when I was in school. He covers the Russians in Northern California and their time at Ft Ross, north of Bodega Bay. The story follows Fremont's adventures and an interesting cast of characters during the Bear Flag revolt.
