Where Their Worm Does Not Die
Today we are going to talk about Hell. What it is. What it means. How you can escape it.Before we even Get into the text there are some baseline agreements that mentally you need to agree to before you begin to try to understand the meaning of this text.I believe Hell to be a real place. It exists. I am not afraid of it because I am not going there.I don’t live for Jesus because I’m afraid of Hell, I live for Jesus because I’m a afraid of life without him.
First agreement: Jesus is God in the flesh. Everything he speaks is truth. He can be trusted. He means what he says and says what he means. Some things he has said were symbolic or figurative, but where Jesus speaks plainly, we should allow him to speak plainly. In addition to his Messiahship, Jesus preaching was to ‘set the record straight’ so to speak. People did not understand God as they shouldSecond agreement: The Bible is true in its descriptions of all things regarding truth pertaining to YHWH, the people of Abraham and followers of Jesus Christ. It is true in its entiretyThird agreement: What we think about what Hell is, or what it should be is irrelevant in a discussion about Hell- we must let the scriptures speak for themselves. Hell is what the scriptures say it isFourth agreement: Talking about Hell does not negate God’s love for you as described in the BibleFifth agreement: None of us decide who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell- the Bible describes it, and we can read it, but the ultimate decision rests on God alone upon our exit from this earthSixth agreement: People who have repented of their sins and received Christ as savior do not have to fear Hell. Those who are ‘in Christ’ on the day of their death will be welcomed into heaven
So what does this text say? We’re going to break it down into a few pieces, but first off, I want to solidify the definition and description of Hell, so when we speak of what Jesus meant in this scripture, you know what he meant.
Hell in the OT
The word “Hell” doesn’t exist in the OT, but the word “Sheol” does. Sheol is “the deep”Scholars differ on why the OT isn’t expressly clear on the doctrine of Hell in the NT senseBut the OT DOES Speak about a few themes that are part of God’s nature and characterGod’s wrath will eventually be meted out upon the Earth:Psalm 110:5 The Lord is at Your right hand; He shall execute kings in the day of His wrath.Read Zephaniah 1– The imagery and description of God’s wrath and his eventual day of judgment upon the Earth and his covenant people cannot be understated. God will have his dayDaniel 12:2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt.
God will have his day of vengeance:Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.Isaiah 14:15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.The fact that the OT doesn’t expressly say the words “Hell” doesn’t discount what Jesus and the NT says about it. Did Jesus get it wrong? Was Jesus misinformed? Was Jesus lying? NO NO NO
Hell in the NT
In Jesus Sermon on the mount which is arguably the most agreed upon discourse of our Savior by which people judge his nature, character and theology describes HellMatt 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
