Whetu Cormick: Teachers will be 'unimpressed' with pay increase

Listen Later

The Principals Federation says the government's pay offer for primary teachers is better for graduates, but won't solve the shortage.
The offer sees teachers being given a pay rise of up to eight percent over three years, which falls well short of the union's call for a 16 percent rise over two years.
To attract new teachers, there'll be an increase of up to 14.7 percent to the base salaries of graduate teachers.
Principals Federation President Whetu Cormick told Mike Hosking the pay rise for graduates will hopefully attract more to the sector, but there's not enough for others.
"It does go some way towards addressing the issue we have with a decrease in the number of young people out of high school wanting to become teachers, and so that going to be an attractive better offer for them."
Cormick says the rest of the sector will not be happy with the current offer.
"The rest of our teachers I think they would have expected a great deal more, teaching is quite a stressful job at the moment so I think they'll be unimpressed."
