Let's first understand what is Test Automation.  Earlier everything used to be manual in testing. The testers used to go  to every web-app and check the click, login and other functionality.

Now  this is a very manual job and a junior tester can also do it. So,  senior manual testers started to loose jobs, which they are loosing even  today.

Automation testing came into picture some  years back, in which you have to write test cases in programming  languages like python and Java. And then they will run in application  like selenium. It feels like a magic, when you see a Selenium running on  your web-app, with everything done automatically.

But  most manual testers hated it till date, as they had to learn  programming. But it have a good future at least for the next 5-6 years.  The reason is that these tools keep on changing.

But  if a tester learnt python or Java because of these tools, he can easily  switch to development. Because development will be out there till AI  starts coding better then humans ie next 30-40 years. 

So,  if you are a tester and want to continue in the field learn programming  languages like python/Java and move to automation testing.

You can also directly move to development, which will always have and exiting and great future.
