hello everybody welcome to while shepard's watched their flocks by night may seem a bit early but we haven't got very long till christmas have we it's august already and actually you know you need to spend a month or two perfecting a piece of music when you first learn it especially if you're what uh might be referred to as a newbie or an oldie with a new uh poncho for learning the wonderful wonderful art of playing the piano so this tune is a traditional um it's quite grand it's a bit coral in structure and it uses some very basic elements when i play the right hand you may be able to do a little bit of improvising on the left because this cor this chord structure is is actually very straightforward and you know there's not too much that's too difficult of course learning the notes is is a little bit trickier than sort of making them up as you go along let me play it really slowly

okay it's very very straightforward but did you notice we had a couple of right hand chords um well it's two notes you wouldn't really refer to two notes as a chord but of course with stuff going on in the left hand so they very much do construct a chord when um you've got both hands together so i'm going to tell you the names of the notes

f a a g f b flat e and b flat f and a g a c c and f b and f c and d a g c b flat a g third over f another c sharp and an e

a d into g two f's

an e and a finish on a c and an f okay now when i play those two notes and i'm calling out the f and the c or the b and the f if you're struggling just play the second note that i say so the c the b the c um we can do that it's important to play really the top note because that's your melody it's your singing line normally um and that's what makes sense so we can miss out all the other notes we can just play that right hand as a series of single notes without anything else and everybody knows what we're playing you see this it's a very well-known song we don't actually need to do anything else and we could now that we know that we could play that with a backing track and that might be quite fun and i'll be doing that in a minute i'll do i'll pop a little podcast up in a minute um with me playing that with uh with a couple of my couple of my robot pals my uh bang crash wallop will be on drums and maybe some some guitar see if i can get some arpeggios or some scales in the background okay um so should we just go through that one more time
