Beneath the red-brick pavement of South St. Louis lies miles of hollow, prehistoric limestone caverns. In the late 1800s, that cold, subterranean underworld wasn't viewed as a void—it was viewed as an empire. It became the natural cold-storage engine behind the Western Brewery, a sprawling industrial titan that turned the Lemp family into brewing royalty and gave birth to Falstaff beer.
Sitting directly on top of that subterranean maze was their 33-room Victorian fortress: hand-carved African mahogany, ceiling frescoes, walk-in bank vaults, and private tunnels leading 30 feet underground to a subterranean ballroom and spring-fed swimming pool.
To the world outside, the Lemps had conquered the Gilded Age. But an empire built over limestone holds dark secrets in its mortar. Within a single generation, that very same palace bore witness to the agonizing collapse of a bloodline—marked by scandalous high-society divorces, the sudden death blow of Prohibition, and four family suicides spanning decades within the home.
Grab a seat in the back room and pour something stiff. Because where every foundation tells a story… the past refuses to fade.
In This Episode:
The Geology of Beer: How the natural 52-degree Cherokee Cave system allowed Adam Lemp to build a brewing dynasty before commercial refrigeration existed.
The Fortress on Cherokee Street: 33 rooms of Gilded Age extravagance, walk-in bank vaults, speaking-tube surveillance, and midnight speakeasy galas held 30 feet underground.
The Lavender Lady Scandal: Billy Lemp’s volatile, high-society marriage to Lillian Handlan—the heiress obsessed with custom purple silk, lavender carriages, and white horses with braided ribbons.
Prohibition's Execution Order: The arrogance, padlocked gates, and tragic financial unraveling that shattered a multi-million-dollar empire for pennies on the dollar.
What Lingers in the Mortar: The front office door that deadbolts itself from the inside, the freezing 3:00 AM clock chimes in the master suite, and the tragic attic lore of "The Monkey Boy."
🍸 Pick Your Poison: The Gilded Faust
A cocktail bridging Gilded Age study luxury and the cold, subterranean malt vats beneath Cherokee Street:
2 oz Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon (100-proof)
1/2 oz Black Walnut Liqueur (Nocino)
1/4 oz Rich Demerara Syrup (2:1 raw cane sugar to water)
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Float: 2 oz Dark Craft Lager or Doppelbock
Garnish: Expressed orange peel
Instructions: Stir the bourbon, walnut liqueur, syrup, and bitters over ice for 30 rotations until silk-smooth and chilled. Strain over a single clear ice block in a heavy rocks glass. Slowly float the cold dark lager over the back of a bar spoon to create a dense, velvety malt crown. Express an orange peel over the rim and drop it onto the foam.

Perched high atop the foggy ridges of the Ozark Mountains sits the "Grand Lady of the Ozarks"—the 1886 Crescent Hotel. Built as an ultra-lavish mountain retreat for Gilded Age travelers seeking the valley's supposed healing springs, this massive limestone fortress eventually became the hunting ground for one of the most ruthless medical con men in American history: Norman Baker.
In this episode, we uncover the boomtown history of Eureka Springs, Norman Baker’s rise from vaudeville illusionist to demagogue, and his tragic "Baker Cancer Clinic." We explore the painful treatments forced onto dying patients, the forged letters sent to families, the secret basement morgue, and the moving 2019 archaeological excavation led by state teams after landscaper David Dickerson unearthed hundreds of Baker's buried specimen jars.
Finally, we walk the quiet halls to remember the lives tied to the stone—from Michael the Irish stonemason and the gentle presence of Theodora in Room 419, to Morris the beloved ghost cat and the lingering shadow of the fraudulent doctor himself.

Pick Your Poison Cocktail: The Last Word
A pre-Prohibition classic crafted with Green Chartreuse—originally formulated in 1737 by French Carthusian monks as an "Elixir of Long Life":
¾ oz London Dry Gin
¾ oz Green Chartreuse
¾ oz Maraschino Liqueur
¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
Method: Add all ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake hard until frosted over, then double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Sharp, intensely herbal, and medicinal.

Beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers of Michigan Avenue lies a dark, subterranean maze where the liquor flowed, the bodies vanished, and hotel management literally drywalled over their problems.
This week on Whispers in the Walls, I am checking into Chicago's legendary Congress Plaza Hotel. Originally constructed as a Gilded Age palace for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, this sprawling 14-story fortress became an epicenter of high-society luxury, underworld violence, and documented tragedy.
In this episode, I uncover:
The 1893 Predator: How America's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, stalked Michigan Avenue lobbies like the Congress to lure fairgoers down to his Englewood "Murder Castle."
Capone’s Underground Rail Empire: How the Chicago Outfit commandeered the 60-mile subterranean electric freight railway beneath the Loop to traffic illegal liquor and make victims disappear.
The Spanish-American War Groom: The tragic 1898 suicide of Captain Louis Ostheim on the eve of his wedding, and the pacing military boots heard on the floorboards today.
The 13th Floor Grief: The heartbreaking 1939 tragedy of Jewish refugee Adele Langer and her two young sons.
Room 441 & Stephen King: The aggressively violent entity that inspired King's terrifying short story and film 1408, alongside the fedora-wearing "Shadow Man."
The Room of Horrors: The infamous 12th-floor room so dangerous that management ripped out the door, boarded the frame, drywalled over the hallway entrance, and erased it from hotel blueprints—where guards still hear knocking from inside the wall.
The Gold Room Ghost Bride & The 10-Year Strike: The phantom bride photobombing wedding pictures, and the real-life testimonies of workers from the longest hotel strike in U.S. history who refused to clean certain rooms alone.
Grab a glass, double-check your locks, and step past the velvet rope.

Deep in the Nebraska Sandhills sits Walgren Lake—a quiet, 50-acre body of water where families fish for crappie and pelicans drift through the reeds. But in the 1920s, it went by another name: Alkali Lake. And for a few unhinged years, local ranchers, big-city investors, and international newspapers were utterly convinced a 40-foot prehistoric horned leviathan was dragging cattle into the muck.
In this episode, we’re unpacking the bizarre saga of the Alkali Lake Monster (known affectionately today as "Ossie"):
The Roots of the Lore: The surreal geography of the Sandhills and the ancient Lakota traditions of the Unktehi (horned water spirits) locked in eternal battle with the Wakinyan (Thunderbirds).
The 1920s Panic: Vanishing calves, mysterious giant tracks, and the infamous Hay Springs News headline: "If It Isn't a Whale, It's a Whaler of An Animal."
The 1923 Sighting: J.A. Johnson's eyewitness account of an armored, 40-foot alligator-rhino hybrid roaring out of a glorified cow puddle.
Global Hysteria: How the story reached the London Times, sparked armed shoreline posses, and inspired wild schemes to trap the beast using live bait, steel nets, and steam tractors.
The Con Man Behind the Curtain: The brilliant, shameless practical jokes of Colonel John G. Maher—the newspaperman who previously fooled the country with a concrete "petrified man" and a fake boiling soap spring.
The Geological Plot Hole: Why a historic 1889 drought proved the entire monster story was physically impossible from day one.
Grab a glass, settle in, and remember: a good story will beat the facts every single day of the week.
Step past the heavy stone threshold of one of America’s most notoriously haunted landmarks. Looming high above Louisville, Kentucky, Waverly Hills was constructed as an impenetrable bat-wing fortress to quarantine victims of the deadly White Plague. Tonight, we unearth the true horrors trapped within its walls: from primitive medical experiments and the subterranean darkness of the 500-foot Body Chute, to the institutional cruelty of the Woodhaven era and the malevolent entities—like the Doppelgänger and The Creeper—still stalking the fourth floor.
⚠️ Content & Trigger Warnings
This episode contains historical discussions of terminal illness (tuberculosis), graphic medical and surgical procedures (forced lung collapse, rib removal, tube feeding), patient neglect, psychiatric institutional abuse (unmodified electroshock therapy, chemical/physical restraints), suicide, and occult violence. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Beneath the glittering Italian marble and the high-society glamour of the Wyoming frontier lies a building soaked in over a century of human trauma, heartbreak, and uncontainable rage.
This week on Whispers in the Walls, I am driving into Cheyenne, Wyoming—the "Magic City of the Plains"—to check into the historic Plains Hotel. Built in 1911 as a luxury sanctuary for wealthy cattle barons and railroad tycoons, the grand opening was celebrated as an absolute triumph. But within months, the fourth floor became the bloody stage for a horrific honeymoon massacre that local authorities desperately tried to erase from the history books.
I’ll walk you through the architectural triumphs of the hotel before turning out the lights to explore the dark, lingering echoes left behind. I track down the heartbroken bride of Room 444, investigate the phantom 911 calls still dialing out from Room 530 decades after a tragic death, and venture down into the subterranean labyrinth where a little boy still plays hide-and-seek near the antique elevator shafts.
This Week's Poison: The Cowboy Manhattan
2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
1 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Brandied cherry garnish
Lock the doors, Bootleggers. It’s time to get this show on the road.
Stairs that end at the ceiling. Doors that open to sheer drops. A 160-room Victorian labyrinth built with an ocean of blood money.
For a century, the Winchester Mystery House has been sold as the ultimate American ghost story—the tale of a crazed, reclusive widow building 24 hours a day to outrun the furious spirits of those killed by her family's legendary rifle. But the truth is far more tragic, and completely different than the tourist brochures claim.
In this episode of Whispers in the Walls, I pull back the dust covers on Llanada Villa to uncover the real Sarah Winchester. I explore the crushing weight of the Winchester fortune, the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake that trapped her in the rubble, and how a 1970s carnival promoter turned a brilliant woman's grief into a multi-million-dollar myth.
Then, I turn out the lights to explore the very real, very chilling paranormal encounters that staff and night watchmen still experience in the twisting corridors today.
Lock the doors, Bootleggers. It’s time to get this show on the road.
Perched high in the Colorado Rockies, The Stanley Hotel holds over a century of grand ambition, architectural elegance, and chilling lore. In this episode, we step inside the historic 1909 estate to uncover the true history and mysteries hidden behind its grand facade.
Inside this episode:
The Pioneer's Dream: The true history and construction of F.O. Stanley’s high-altitude mountain retreat.
Room 217: The desolate, off-season night in 1974 that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining.
Echoes in the Ballroom: Documented lore, uninvited guests, and the legends that refuse to fade from Estes Park.
Pick Your Poison: Behind the bar with the classic 1920s Jack Rose cocktail.
Grab your glass and pull up a chair, Bootleggers.

Behind the towering, gothic stone walls in Philadelphia lies Eastern State Penitentiary—a radical 19th-century experiment in total solitary confinement that quickly spiraled into a waking nightmare. Designed to force absolute silence and spiritual isolation, its crumbling radial cellblocks still echo with the torment of those kept in the dark.
In this debut episode of Whispers in the Walls, we step across the threshold into America’s most notorious abandoned prison. We examine the tragic origins of the penitentiary model, look inside the lavish, carpeted cell of Prohibition kingpin Al Capone, and unearth the terrifying paranormal encounters that continue to linger today—from the shadowy figures in Cellblock 12 to the phantom footsteps in the corridors.
The Quaker Experiment: How a well-intentioned reform philosophy turned into torturous psychological isolation.
Architecture of Surveillance: The revolutionary wagon-wheel hub design built for total control and inescapable quiet.
Al Capone’s Luxurious Stay: How the South Side gang leader spent his 1929 stay in Cellblock 8 listening to waltzes on a cabinet radio.
The Shadows Left Behind: First-hand accounts of spectral laughter, unseen hands, and unexplained energy shifts inside the decaying cellblocks.
To match our exploration of Al Capone’s stay at Eastern State, our premier cocktail is The Southside—the crisp, refreshing gin drink rumored to be the signature pour of Capone’s Chicago syndicate during Prohibition.
Ingredients:
2 oz Gin
3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
3/4 oz Simple Syrup (1:1)
6–8 Fresh Mint Leaves
Preparation: Lightly clap the mint leaves to release the oils and drop them into a shaker. Add gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup with ice. Shake vigorously until well-chilled, then double-strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a floating mint leaf.
