Set mainly in Louisiana during the years 1861-1868, this passionate novel of me, woman and war tells the story of the author's ancestor's, Confederate soldier Willie Burke, during the American Civil War. A classic Burke hero, Willie is soon in conflict with his superiors. The characters who people these pages, many of them based on real historical figures, are as memorable as any Burke has created. Mulatto, Flower Jamison, victim of terrible abuse who is determined to better herself; Abigail Dowling, whose Unionist sympathies put her in constant danger and Colonel Ira Jamison, rotten to his core yet who would rise from a cesspit smelling of roses.
Members Reviews:
James Lee Burke's books.....always a winner.
I recommend this book highly. James Lee Burke's are full of wonderful characters, plots that keep your interest. His description of people and areas read like poetry. I see the people and places in my mind and feel as though I am right there with them. I am a fan of his writing and have reread some of his books, because they are so well written and interesting. You will not be disappointed in this book or in any of his books.
incredible author
James Lee Burke is one of the best American writers I have read. I read a great deal and have an extensive background in classical literature, and believe me, literary historians will agree that he is a writing talent that ranks with Faulkner and Fitzgerald. I have a friend who listens to audio versions of the same books I read and he calls Burke "ear candy". To me the written versions of his novels create "mental eye candy" --the pictures created by setting descriptions, through every artifice known in the art of writing, are lush, thought provoking, and involving. The reader is simply left in awe by the power of Mr. Burke's talent, immersed in a mental landscape created by a verbal master.
All of his books are like this. I gave this one to a James Lee Burke neophyte--my PhD history professor/author/sister. Have yet to hear her review, but given my previous accolades, you might imagine what I thought of this book over others by the same author in order to choose it for recommendation.
This author and this book receive my highest possible rating.
A DRAMATIC LOOK AT LIFE AND HISTORY
GREAT STORY JAMES LEE BURKE TAKES YOU IN TO THE SOUTH DURING THE CIVIL WAR.THE PEOPLE AND THE ACTION ARE MOVING AND VIVID.AS WITH THE ALL THE AUTHORS BOOKS THERE IS A STRONG MESSAGE ABOUT LIFE
Looking Back at the Past
I've read most of James Lee Burke's books. I was interested in this one for it's historical time period and curious about what he might want readers to learn about it. This may not be his most prolific book, but it has the feel of Burke throughout and the character's are Burkian from the beginning. Burke's women are often two dimensional: strong, competent, supportive, but not always represented in the introspective, self assessing way his male characters are. This book is the exception. In this book he portrays the two leading women much as he does his men in other books. They are good people who are involved in poor situations that make the best of their plight and do their best to improve the lives of others around them. This is the virtue of our common situation in life and what binds us all together.
