The January 6 insurrection in Washington, DC was a sobering reminder that there is an active white supremacy movement in the United States—and it hasn’t gone away just because Trump is out of office.
The truth is, atrocity crimes can happen anywhere, even here, as genocide expert Alex Hinton argues in his new book.
For today’s show, guest host Karma Chávez hosts a vital and timely discussing with Alex Hinton about the history of genocide, the 1619 Project and current debates about critical race theory, and white power extremism and the myth of “white genocide.”
Alex Hinton is professor of anthropology, director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO chair on genocide prevention at Rutgers University. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Why Did They Kill?: Cambodia in the Shadow of Genocide (University of California Press, 2005) and most recently It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US (NYU Press, 2021).
