An Indian parable tells the story of three blind men who come across an elephant for the first time. One man feels its trunk and believes it is a snake. One man feels his leg and believes it is a tree trunk. The final man feels its tail and thinks it is a rope. None of them can understand what an elephant is because they only have a partial view. Their understanding does not change what the elephant is, but, every day, people allow others to shape their self-identity based on a similar partial picture. In this week’s message, based on John 4:1-42, Pastor David Cartwright encourages us to understand how God, who can see every aspect of us, knows who we are.
