Who Am I?

Listen Later

In second Samuel 7, the Lord God makes a series of promises to King David about his kingdom and eventually a coming messiah, since David’s throne will endure forever. We know that this would be through Jesus and His coming kingdom. It was an amazing series of promises.

But David is a guy who always amazes and we read his response to God’s promises in 2 Samuel 7:18-19. Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, Sovereign Lord, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant—and this decree, Sovereign Lord, is for a mere human!”

I love David’s question to God. “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” Remember that David was the sheepherder that God had taken from the sheep pens to lead his nation. From the manure pile to the palace. God had given him victory after victory until he had subdued the nations around them and was now secure.

David had no sense of entitlement. Rather, he had a spirit of humility. Who am I that the sovereign God of the universe would pay attention to me! That is the question each one of us ought to ask. Think of what God has done for you. The prayers he has answered. The sin he has forgiven. The gifts He has given. The grace in which you live. How can we not ask the same question: Who am I, Sovereign Lord, that you have brought me thus far?

None of us deserve the attention of the God of the universe. With eight plus billion people on this planet he knows our name, our situation, our dreams and our failures. He knows it all and yet he loves us and cares for us and calls us His friend. And family. Sons and daughters.

Who are we? We are the recipients of God’s grace just as David was. Unfortunately it is easy to take Him for granted. To miss the magic and grandeur and the totally undeserved nature of His goodness to us. God found David in the sheep pen. Where did he find you? Think today about his goodness in your life and ask with wonder, “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?”

And then take a moment to thank him. Maybe make a list in a quiet moment of all He has done for you and, again, thank Him.

Father, you are an amazing God. You have brought me this far and I know you will bring me to my destination. Thank you. Thank you. Amen.
