Since 2015, Nigerians have been hearing from the government that Boko Haram has “technically” been defeated. The most prominent voice delivering that message has been Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture. Standing in complete contrast to what the administration is saying are headlines like: “Boko Haram slaughters 43 farmers in Borno” and as recent as this month, “Gunmen attack Katsina school, abduct students”.
The government’s communication strategy seems to be at odds with the reality on the ground. Which made us wonder, who is the Lai Mohammed actually talking to?
This episode was made by Alexandra Gekpe, Rabia Hadejia, Richard Anyebe, Dominic Tabakaji, and Sam Tabakaji.
Special thanks to Dr. Abdullahi Tasiu, John Iwodi, Anthonieta Kalunta, Stanley Bentu and Mala Iwa Gbado Ikaleku.
