Who is Lhara Mullins? The Education Bridge

A Conversation with Dr Lhara Mullins

Paul Hazzard talks with Dr Lhara Mullins, lecturer, at the University of Galway, about her inspiring journey from childhood to becoming a passionate advocate for education, inclusion, and empowerment.

Lhara reflects on her school days. She candidly discusses how, if diagnosed today, she would likely have been identified as neurodivergent. But despite the challenges, she embraced her experiences, recognising that they shaped her path.

Her journey in education was far from traditional. From an adult learner programme to a PhD in Health Promotion, every step was a leap into the unknown. She speaks about imposter syndrome and the barriers many students face, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, but highlights the power of perseverance, self-belief and supportive educators.

As a mother of neurodivergent children, Lhara understands first-hand the importance of tailored support in education. She shares how navigating this journey fuelled her passion for equality, diversity, and inclusion, leading her to develop autism awareness training and advocate for systemic change.

At the heart of her work is the belief that education is a bridge—one that transforms lives. She stresses that learning isn’t just about absorbing content but about changing perspectives, developing confidence, and realising potential. For her, the most rewarding part of teaching is seeing students flourish, whether they complete a degree or simply take a few steps forward.

Lhara’s energy for education is infectious. Whether she’s mentoring students, writing books, delivering training, or sharing insights on social media, her mission is clear: to empower others with knowledge, support, and belief in themselves.
