The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is one of the best known stories in the Bible. It still surprises me! Here is the set up:
An expert in the Law wanted to test Jesus (vs 25). Jesus asks: How do you read your Scriptures? (vs 26). After his correct response, we learn that he wanted to justify himself, and so he asked, "who is my neighbor?"
Jesus both confronts us with our prejudice, and calls us to have mercy on anyone who needs it!
Breaking news: During the sermon, Pastor Christine interrupted me to explain that Mary sat at Jesus feet because she wanted to be a teaching disciple... Martha's upset was not just at Mary's failing to help, but also because Mary was violating household conventions! Hmmmm... Much to think about!
