The birth, ministry and eventual sacrifice of Jesus shouldn't have caught anyone off guard in the slightest. He was the prophesied One - the way He would be born, the ministry He would have and the way He would die were all accounted for well before He was born! In the midst of those promises can be found the true nature of who our God really is - fully God and fully man and He came to restore us to His Father!
