Who Knows

Listen Later

A difficult one to write, 18 years in the making. I remember this night as if it happened yesterday.
You burst in my bedroom door, pulled my covers to the floor
Hit the light in the dead of night, like a hundred times before
You said, “She’s back in town today, in a house five miles away
Won’t you come with me, I’ll make her see I can’t let her get away.”
I said, “You’ve had a couple more than ten, why don’t you stay the night and then
In the morning light you can do it right and win her back again.”
You said, “I don’t care what people say, it doesn’t matter anyway.”
A tight embrace, you kissed my face then turned and walked away.
I wish I could’ve told you before you went away
And if I’d only held you and never let you go
Who knows..?
The phone woke me up again, morning sun was shining in
Word gets around, “Are you sitting down?”, they started to explain
They said your car had left the road and that you won’t be coming home
I’m torn apart, it breaks my heart that I let you leave alone
I wish I could’ve told you before you went away
And if I’d only held you and never let you go
Who knows..?
Well, I guess I’ll never know
You burst in my bedroom door, pulled my covers to the floor
Hit the light in the dead of night, like a hundred times before
You said, “She’s back in town today, in a house not far away
But I don’t care, I’ll just stay here, I’m not worried any more.”
I wish I could’ve told you before you went away
And if I’d only held you and never let you go
Who knows..?
