The Dwight and Patty Show

Who wants to live in a world where Gladys Knight comes in second place? (Tom Desavia)

Listen Later

This is part two of our conversation with music publisher extraordinaire, Tom Desavia, who retired for a bit after feeling uninspired and a little lost within the industry. His audiobook received a Grammy nomination, but the political climate pushed him into a dark place mentally. He cashed in some flyer miles and went to Hawaii on whim for two weeks, which seemed like a terrible mistake as he exited the plane in Waikiki. He actually did love what he did for a living. (Dwight worries this will happen to Patty if she ever hangs up her hat.) Desavia instantly put feelers out when he returned to LA, but the tumbleweeds rolled by and imposter syndrome set in. Lucky for Concord Music, Desavia was available when they needed to fill a roll that suited him to a T. Okay, so what is a publishing company, and what is their role in an artists career? Why does a songwriter work with one? Should they? What is a sync, and how can that supplement an artist’s income? The right sync can not only make an artist a good bit of cash, and can also give their music a bit of immortality that maybe it wouldn’t have had otherwise. So how does an artist go about connecting with a publisher? Side note: Art is NOT competitive -and- There is NO fast track!
Be sure to check out Tom Desavia’s second book, ‘More Fun In The New World, The Unmaking and Legacy of LA Punk’ featuring about 23 authors from the punk scene writing about the era from 1982-1987. (Everybody reads their own chapter in the audiobook version which is wicked cool!)
